Epilepsy Symposium - Message from Meeting Chair

The focus of the symposium will be on techniques for extraoperative evaluation: StereoEEG, grids, and other modalities.  We will plan for sessions in the morning and afternoon on the 7th, and in the morning only on the 8th.  We have asked Francesco Cardinale, Jorge Gonzalez Martinez, Patrick Chauvel and William Gaillard to each speak for a half an hour or so.  Interspersed among the formal talks, we will present individual cases for the rest of the time. This can be a chance to really engage, understand and learn from the cases and each other.  And the more neurologists we can induce to come, the more rich the multidisciplinary discussions can be.

I invite you now to consider preparing cases for presentation.  The committee will evaluate cases based on the information received, and (if necessary) select 12 or 13 from among the offerings.  We anticipate a presentation, similar in format to the ones we all use at our multidisciplinary epilepsy surgery planning/evaluation conferences.  We will have available the means to present video EEG from virtually any system you use, like our own XLtec, neuroimaging from DICOM storage format (and neuroradiologists to interpret them), Curry software for presentation, and conventional PowerPoint.  Ideally, the presentations would be done by both a neurosurgeon and   a neurologist.  We will allot plenty of time for discussion. We will plan a program to take advantage of everyone’s expertise, and to be able to really dissect cases together.

Please go through your records (and recollections) to identify cases from which you gained an important insight, or had a revelation which helped shape your perspective, and share it in this more informal setting.  When you have a case you would like to present, please prepare a short synopsis to us indicating the type of seizures, a few details of the workup and what made the case interesting or special.  We will try to balance types of cases if needed.

Send an email to me directly at Michael.handler@childrenscolorado.org so that we can work to identify presenting groups/institutions as soon as possible. We can then work to make sure presentations are formatted similarly for a smooth meeting. We will want to have the program formalized by July.
