TUESDAY AFTERNOON SPORTS DAY

Colorado is known for outdoors activities. On Tuesday afternoon, we will offer several opportunities to take advantage of this at the meeting.  Most will need interested people to commit to participate in advance, by registering and paying at the website, so we can reserve the appropriate equipment and arrange for lunches.

golf.jpgGolf:  we have room for up to 12 people to play 9 holes of golf at the beautiful Wellshire Golf Club in suburban Denver, a short ride from the hotel. Rental equipment and golf carts will be available.  Transportation, boxed lunch and cost of 9-holes will cost approximately $115 per person, depending on how many people sign up. Rental equipment to be paid directly.

hiking.jpgHiking: Our congress president Mike Handler and his neurosurgical colleague will lead a group hiking in hills within 45 minutes from downtown, on a hike of mild to moderate difficulty, for about 2.5 hours.  We can guarantee spectacular scenery.  No specialized gear or shoes are needed, but would recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and something warm.  A light backpack is recommended.  Water, lunches, snacks and sunscreen will be provided for $25 per person.  Up to 12 people in addition to the group leaders can be accommodated in private cars; if more are interested, we will need to hire a van and the cost may rise proportionately.

bicycling1.jpgBicycling #1: Two other Colorado neurosurgeons, Todd Hankinson and Brent O'Neill, will lead people with a serious bicycling interest in a ride through scenic and somewhat challenging terrain, close to Denver.  Bicycle rentals can be arranged for $70, with specialized pedals for those so inclined for an additional $10.  Helmets provided at no cost.  Lunches, water, snacks and sunscreen provided for about $25 per person.  It is recommended you bring your specialized clothing.  Depending on numbers of interested people, riders will be accommodated in the group leaders private cars; if more people are interested, we will need to hire a van and the cost may rise proportionately.

bicycling2.pngBicycling #2: For the less athletically enthusiastic, you can see Denver by bike on this Mile High Bike Tour. Starting downtown, this bike tour will take you on an approximately 9.5 mile trip around Denver, including a 15-minute stop at Union Station where you can take pictures, grab an ice cream cone, or pop into the shops! This unique and personal biking experience will navigate along riverside bike paths, city bike lanes and neighborhood streets. During the tour you'll visit diverse public art, important government buildings, beautiful parks, distinct architecture, professional sports arenas and so much more! This will begin a short walk from the hotel.  We will need a minimum of 15 participants, with a cost of $109 per person

bicyclingown.pngBicycling:  For a do it yourself option, a couple of blocks from the hotel is a station for Denver B-cycle.  https://denver.bcycle.com  You can pick up a bike, and for a nominal fee, use it by the hour. Descriptions of options for self-guided bicycle tours are available at  https://www.denver.org/things-to-do/sports-recreation/b-cycle-rides

tourchildrenshospital.jpgTour Children's Hospital Colorado:  Let us know in advance, and we will arrange transport from the Hotel to the Anschutz Medical Campus in nearby Aurora, Colorado.  The neurosurgeon Allyson Alexander will provide a guided walking tour of Children's Hospital and the adjacent School of Medicine Campus for 1.5 hours or so (assuming she has not been called to the operating room!!!—in which case another member of our group will host you. There will be no cost for the visit, or transportation to the campus and back.
