Tony Figaji MBChB, MMED, FCS (Neurosurgery), PhD
Tony Figaji is the Professor and Head of Paediatric Neurosurgery at the University of Cape Town and the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in South Africa, the longest standing paediatric neurosurgery unit in SubSaharan Africa. He is also the National Research Foundation (SARChI) Chair of Clinical Neurosciences and current President of the Society of Neurosurgeons of South Africa, and Pediatric Lead of the Brain Trauma Foundation. He was the ISPN Scientific Chair (2017-2019) and Secretary (2020-2022), past-president of the International Neurotrauma Society (2016-2018), and one of the founding members of GlobalNeuro. His surgical interests are in paediatric neuro-oncology. He runs a research group, African Brain Child, that is multidisciplinary and translational in nature. Their work focuses on mechanisms of acute brain injury, neuro-inflammation, metabolism, and drug distribution in the brain. They are recent recipients of a Wellcome Trust Discovery grant.
